Net loss.

AMD is reporting revenues of $1.65B which is 5% higher than Q1 this year, 40% higher than Q2 of last year, and is apparently a record for the company. They are also reporting a net loss of $43 million,

According to AMD, they signed on a number of new notebook OEMs (Sony being the most notable company to use AMD chips again), and since notebook manufacturers solder GPU’s onto the motherboards of their units typically, they can’t ship systems if they are missing the GPU component. That being the case, AMD allocated more production capacity to mobile GPU products (and away from the higher end GPU’s which garner higher ASPs) this past quarter to enable notebook makers to ship more AMD based systems.

I was hoping, despite the forum being a "ghost town" ( ), that somebody would pick up the following snippet from the above linked article:

Quote:
Their recent Magny-Cours Opteron 6000 series launch was apparently marred by OEM’s dragging their feet in bringing AMD server designs to market which caused AMD to miss out on much of the recent server buying spree.

AMD "partners" have dragged their feet on previous product launches. Intel got fined.

Just a random paranoid thought.

Although AMD is still a long way behind Intel in the mobile market, the company is doing much better than in 2009 or 2008. AMD’s new 45nm mobile CPUs have managed to gain back some ground and the outfit has scored quite a few potentially very lucrative design wins. A year ago we would have had a very hard time recommending any AMD mobile part, but the company has managed to make quite a bit of progress since then and it’s always good to see some healthy competition.

While not terribly exciting it is still good news for AMD & the consumer.

I really should try & follow the laptop/mobile side of things.

In fact, the vast majority of new AMD-based notebooks is based on the Athlon II P320, a 2.1GHz part with 1MB of L2 cache and a 25W TDP. This is a no-thrills processor, but it’s available in €350 machines and you also get integrated HD 4200 graphics to boot.

If I was interested in a laptop I'd want more from the CPU & GPU (Desktop replacement) but this 25W CPU has its place.

Dell & AMD. Related to the previous post.

the mini-PC is about to get quite a boost in the form of the new Zino 410.

The setup guide - which made its way onto Dell's support website - points to all new internals using AMD's latest parts. The information lists a range of CPUs as being on offer, including Athlon II, Turion II, Phenom II and V-series chips. This of course means that the new Zino will be available in single-, dual-, triple- and even quad-core flavours.
